Great Hygiene Will Help
The cleaner and healthier your teeth and gums are, the whiter and more beautiful your smile will be. Here’s how to get the most out of your hygiene routine:
- Brush for two minutes at least twice a day – especially after eating foods and drinks that are particularly staining like coffee, red wine, curry, or berries.
- When flossing, be sure to gently slide the floss up and down on each side of the tooth. This will remove plaque from hard-to-reach places that can yellow the teeth over time.
- Chewing sugar-free gum is a great way to stimulate salivary flow, which naturally washes away food debris and plaque to keep your mouth clean.
- If you don’t have access to a toothbrush or gum, rinsing your mouth out with water is a great way to remove pigments from foods that can stain your teeth.
- Don’t forget checkups and cleanings every six months! Your hygienist will take care of any hard deposits of tartar that you can’t remove at home and will polish your teeth so they’re smooth and shiny.
Use the Right Products
- A whitening toothpaste will remove stains better than a regular formula.
- Also, an electric toothbrush will do a better job removing stains than a manual because it provides between 6,000-30,000 brush strokes a minute.

Minimize Certain Foods and Beverages
While you don’t have to avoid them entirely, keeping certain foods and beverages to a minimum means you won’t have to touch up as often. This includes things like coffee, tea, red wine, berries, turmeric, and sodas.
However, it is a good idea to completely avoid these foods for 1-2 weeks immediately after whitening. Your teeth will be extra “porous” during this time and will pick up stains more easily.
